In most of the countries in the world including the United States, there are various laws and regulations that govern all pharmacies. Pharmacy law is mainly important because it helps to secure the lives of very many people who might be put in danger when this system is left corruptible. There are various other reasons other than medicinal properties that people buy drugs. In order to avoid this, the following rules were set by the government.
The first rule is that all drugs must be categorized under the following five schedules. The schedule one drugs represent a group of drugs that are very highly addictive. These mainly include the street drugs that are never prescribed for medical use. Some examples include heroin, marijuana and cocaine. The schedule two drugs are also very addictive but their difference with schedule one is that they have some medical usefulness. One example of drug that falls under this category is morphine.
The third schedule of drugs is made up of drugs that are not highly addictive. However, these drugs still have some potential of being abused. The level four and five drugs have a very low level of addictiveness and abuse potential. Under this law, all the pharmacists must make sure they understand everything about the drug schedules and categorize their drugs accordingly to simplify the drug abuse control problem.
The law also asks all druggists and any individual who prescribes medicine to get registered by the US administration prior to any operations. They need to fill a form given to them by the drug implementation department annually. There are however some pharmacies that are excused from this law if they satisfy some set conditions.
In the illegal market, there is usually a very high demand for drugs. This has led to a drastic increase in robbery cases in the pharmacies. For this reason, the law indicates some methods that the pharmacists can use to improve on their security. For instance, they are required to lock their stock very well, have an electric alarm and avoid employing any person who has ever committed a crime related to drugs before.
The pharmacists are also required to make sure they always keep a record of all the transactions they make with different patients. They must keep records of their inventories and all the dispensed medicine. Schedule two drug records must be stored separately. All these records must be in a place that is easily accessible any time they are needed. Inventory records must be compiled after two years.
All druggists are required to authenticate all drug prescriptions they receive before dispensing any medication to their customers. Some of the things that they must check in the prescription document is if it is written by an authorized medical doctor and it the prescriber has written they name and signed the document. The dosage should be clear and above all, it should be enough for only a single patient.
Nonetheless, there are some exceptions of this law that allow pharmacists to issue schedule five medications without the patient having a prescription. The drugs must however only be dispensed to people above 18 years and people who really need the medicine.
