By Janine Hughes

There is a myriad of laws that apply to the pharmaceutical industry and individuals working in it. Pharmacist-attorneys, wholesalers, pharmacists, manufacturers and other stakeholders have formed a pharmacy law society to lobby for their interests. This organization also includes students studying either law or pharmacy and would like to get acquainted with what is happening in this sector.

During foundation, the organization targeted enhancing the legal knowledge of industry stakeholders pertaining to pharmacists, dealing in pharmaceutical care and operating pharmacies. Those who join the society include manufacturers of drugs, distributors, food suppliers and suppliers of medical devices. Members remain well informed about regulations and laws relating to the industry through regular communication.

Membership to this non-profit making organization spreads to include suppliers of dietary and food supplements, medical devices, cosmeceuticals and hospital drugs. Officers charged with quality assurance as consultant or employees are also members. Students pursuing legal studies and pharmacy courses are members. There are attractive scholarships for them as long as they remain within the society.

Beside the monthly reviews on the regulations, legislation and rules touching on the industry, you will get a news letter on trends and recent developments. The newsletter is comprehensive and gathers credible information of interest to members.

An annual conference on the industry is part of the activities members are expected to participate. It contributes over fifteen points to your continuous education credits beyond offering the latest industry information. Members get front role tickets to the conference. It is an incredible way to remain ahead of your peers in the sector.

Membership comes in two categories. The first group includes stakeholders with a pharmacy or law degree and practicing in this environment. Such individuals are required to pay a registration fee of 135 dollars. The student category draws its membership from student-pharmacists body and those pursuing legal studies and hope to join the industry. Their registration fee is only forty dollars and is paid once a year.

The society is run by a board of directors that comprises of four members and an ex-official secretary. The directors are current president, president-elect, immediate former president and the treasurer. Four other members are involved in daily running of the organization even though they are not officers.

An annual meeting must be held according to the bylaws governing the body. Its agenda, time and venue are decided by the board. This does not stop members from making proposals that can guide the decision of this board regarding the agenda, timing and venue of the annual meeting.

As a lobbyist for stakeholders in the pharmaceutical industry, the society ensures that laws made at different levels are not oppressive. They organize seminars and conferences targeting members on different issues. Members enjoy referral services and expert witness services from the group. The organization acts as a link to other bodies working in the pharmaceutical industry. Members get the latest information on legislation and regulations in the two sectors through email. This is the platform that is the voice of stakeholders in this industry on all matters pertaining the law.
