By Raymond Brooks

Discrimination in the workplace is a phenomenon that has slowly been managed. However, there are still some places where people are discriminated against because they are different from the rest of the people in an office. Among the common type of discrimination are gender and race discrimination. In the modern world, the sexual orientation has diversified which has led to the recognition of the Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. However, the level of discrimination against this community has also increased. The law mandates that all employees be treated in the same way regardless of their race, sexual orientation and gender. Here are some of the steps you should take to avoid LGBT workplace discrimination:

The first thing you should do is to sensitize the workers on the various sexual orientations that are there in the society. At times, segregation occurs because people fail to understand this community. You should ensure that your employees understand the existence of different sexual orientations. This is done by organizing campaigns that will teach your workers about various sexual orientations.

Set policies that prohibit any form of discriminative behaviors. However, the policies should be specific. This is to ensure that your employees understand the position of the company on issues that are related to unjust treatment. When there are policies set, then the employees will avoid showing any discriminative tendencies.

Consequences should be stated regarding anyone who discriminates other employees due to their sexual orientation. Employees in the company will be smart enough to follow your rule against discrimination to avoid any form of punishment. For example, anyone who discriminates another will be suspended for one year or demoted depending on the intensity of the situation.

You should encourage a culture of inclusion and appreciation in your company. People of different gender, races, and social orientation should be accepted by the management. A company which accommodates people from this community, teach the rest of the company to accept people from this community too. When a company contains different communities, it is good to share the work equally and with fairness.

Encourage an accommodative culture within the organization. The management should accommodate people from the different races, gender and even sexual orientation. When the management accommodates this community, the rest will also emulate similar behaviors. It is also important that the management assigns duties and responsibility with fairness and equality.

Among the main areas where the LGBT community is discriminated is during the recruitment stage. The people that are involved in the recruitment process should be open-minded. They should recognize the LGBT community as part of the society. You should also ensure that you vet the recruitment process to ensure that there are no discriminatory practices.

Equality is a very important aspect in any organization. But you may find that in most cases, this community is not accepted in some organizations. This has resulted in their poor performance in work. It is advisable that if you have employed people from this community, you ensure there are treated well like other workers. This article has outlined some of the ways to ensure that you create a good working atmosphere which favors everybody including people from this community.
