The information that can be found on the certificate is necessary in updating the family history records. Government offices would also require marriage certificates when processing transactions. Certain transactions in the government would use marriage certificates as documents to prove the identity and status of the one who filed the request. Transactions involving the finances of the couple such as insurance would require such document. Conducting a background check on the marital status of an individual would also use the marriage certificates. Individuals who are planning to get married do this before marriage to make sure that they are going to marry a person with is really single.

The maiden name of the bride and the full name of the groom can be found on the document along with the date and place of their birth. Details of the marriage are shown on the file including the date and the place where it took place. The names of the parents and the witnesses are also documented on the record.

One can get a copy of a marriage certificate in the state of New York from the office of the Vital Records Section. It would only cost $30 to process the retrieval of a certain document. Only records since 1881 are available for release in the state of New York. The marriage records from the counties of Buffalo, Albany and Yonkers are not available at the state office; it can only be obtained from the county clerk office. Requesting it from the county would have a different processing fee and this depends per county.

It is also important to indicate one's contact details on the request form since it will be used to verify their identity. The state only releases the document to the owner of the file and their immediate relatives.
