I Just Got Fired What Do I Do Now

By Michelle Patterson

No one looks forward to being called into an employer's office or the human resource's office for a little talk. Most employees consider this a very bad sign. It may come as a huge shock that your job may be in jeopardy and an even bigger surprise that you are being terminated. Even while the meeting is still going on, you are already thinking, oh no, I just got fired what do I do now. First of all, listen carefully to what the person behind the desk is really telling you.

Having your job terminated does not necessarily mean you have actually been fired. There can be a lot of reasons why a company chooses to remove you from your position. They may be consolidating work duties or eliminating your department altogether. Be sure you have a clear understanding as to what is really happening when you talk with the person in personnel. If you have been terminated for cause, you may not have many options. If your job has been restructured, you may be able to negotiate some benefits.

If the business is adamant that you will not be continuing in your current position and have to go, don't panic. There are important things you need to know while your are in the human resources office. You should get information about how your health benefits will be affected. If you are currently participating in a stock option or retirement plan, you need to know how much time you've got to transfer money.

Depending on the circumstances, there may be a severance package offered. You will probably be required to sign a legal document relinquishing your right to sue the company at a later date before you receive a severance check. You definitely want to get a letter of separation, and it doesn't hurt to ask for a letter of recommendation at the same time.

You should immediately access your financial situation. Hopefully you have set aside a six month cushion to give you time to look for employment. If you have a working spouse, at least you can rely on some income during your search. Update your resume right away. If you need help, there are plenty of online sites that have free suggestions and templates for you to use.

Once you have updated your resume, you can go online and sign up with the most credible job sites on the internet. If you don't find employment right away, you might consider taking a class or two in order to make yourself more competitive in the marketplace.

It is very important to stay positive and stay connected. Let people know you are looking for employment and what you are interested in doing going forward. Be sure you don't isolate yourself from family and friends. You can meet online with people who have been in your circumstances. They might have some great suggestions for you.

Although it may not seem like it at the time, this could be a great opportunity for you. A lot of people decide to start a whole new career, and even go into business for themselves after being let go.
