It is impossible to ignore the contribution African Americans have made to the literary scene. They are the authors behind some of the most amazing titles. Their works cover a range of themes including racism, economic empowerment, relationships, immigration, etc. As Maya Angelou once said that there is no greater agony than bearing an untold story, here are amazing novels by African American authors that everyone should read.

A Brief History of Seven Killings is the work of Marlon James. James is an unrivaled story teller who has shown great eye for details and the ability to create believable characters. The novel digs into the instability in Jamaica and provides a chronicles of the lives of famous characters in the Jamaican society. According to the novel, it is impossible for anyone to escape fate as long as he is living in a certain community or setting.

The Color Purple is written by the recipient of Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award named Alice Walker. She tells the story from the perspective of women especially their contribution to American culture through Broadway shows. It is a narrative laced with courage that was later turned into a move which was a nominee for Academy Award.

Terry Macmillan had already established herself as an award winning story teller with mastery of characterization when she wrote Getting to Happy. It was a continuation of Waiting to Exhale which had already received international acclaim. She sticks with her main characters namely Savannah, Bernadine, Gloria and Robin. She portrays them as vivid, smart mouthed and sassy characters. In their daily endeavors they encounter situations that force them to chase personal happiness that must come from within.

Octavia Butler is a household name whose profile grows with Bloodchild and Other Stories. This title comes after the award winning Kindred. As a recipient of Nebula and Hugo awards, her mastery of science fiction and story telling is undeniable. Her stories link the earth with distant stars in a skillful manner.

The Fifth Season is an imaginative narrative of a rift that causes the view of the sun to be blocked by ash from the earth. The setting captures a hero with a missing daughter after the son is murdered. It is about a festering wound of betrayal. The land where it is set has gotten accustomed to catastrophe leaving no room for mercy. The power holding the earth has been turned into a weapon. The book won international acclaim by receiving the Hugo Award.

Binti is penned by Nnedi Okorafor. It is a story of sacrifice that a person has to make in order to gain knowledge. Being the first recipient of a scholarship to study at Oomza University, she has to sacrifice and be with people who have little regard of her culture. She has to travel through a torturous journey to get the knowledge and bear with the scars of war along the way.

There are many authors who have produced excellent titles worth reading. These writers include Colson Whitehead, James Hannaham and Jesmyn Ward, among others. New writers continue to emerge as the classic titles are turned into award winning movies to underline the value of their narratives.
